Richard Avedon
For our first narrative project we also had to take our beloved persons into the studio. My mother was also there and it felt good that they could take a look at my world for once. The assignment was linked to the portraits of Richard Avedon who you can find at the tab ‘Inspiration’. Richard always gets something back from the models in his portraits. This could be a moment or a feeling for example. You can get this by directing your model. Although, Ruben is my beloved person and he has down syndrome. So you can understand that there is not so much to direct. Because he will go his own way anyway. So this was quite a challenge. But I solved the directing problem with waiting very long to take the portrait. That way he did not knew when I was going to shoot the photo and that gave very interesting images. Now you can really see him and he does not has this mask that people often have when they are aware that a picture is taken of them.
These photos are from two separate shoots. I like the first one because he looks very mature here. The second one is much more mysterious. It seems that he is in his thoughts for a moment. I like them both so chosen between them will be difficult. Which one am I going to show at the assessment?
Tip: Measure the light for the background at multiple places otherwise you will get an overflow.
